After a very bumpy start, Carly starts to learn things about family, friendships, and forgiveness that she’s never been exposed to. Murphy changes the dynamic in her home, where she and her husband are raising three boys, to foster Carly. She has a gigantic rock on her shoulder, no self-esteem, and a jaded view of people. She’s placed with the Murphys while her mom recovers in the hospital. In fact, each of the relationships is hard earned.Ĭarly’s mother let her down in a way no mother should ever let their child down. There is nothing forced in any of these relationships, not with the reader and not between the characters. This book had the unique ability to place me in the shoes of any character at any time.

It is an amazing feat for an author to make you connect to each of the characters. I was the torn and scarred foster child, I was the foster parent who just wanted to connect, I was one of the children who didn’t quite understand why my parents brought a new child to our home. Not because it isn’t excellent, but because it is so well written and so authentic, that I was completely immersed in the lives of these characters. One for the Murphys, however, got me more than a little teary. At the end, I got a little teary nothing major. There have been two books in my teaching career that have made me cry in front of my students. Outstanding chapter book published by Nancy Paulsen Books, a division of Penguin I recommend this book to someone who is into kind of sad books but turns into happy books! There are some parts in this book that younger kids probably should not be reading.One for the Murphys written by Lynda Hunt I liked how Carly started liking the Murphys but when she first moved in with them she didn’t like them at all. I liked this book because it has a lot of ups and downs. Carly doesn’t like her foster brother, but she does like the other two. She made this friend at her new school and her name is Tony, she didn’t tell Tony that she was in a foster home and they got into a big fight when tony found out. Carly was put into the Murphy's house and had to start fresh. Carly's mom went to a mental hospital and Dennis was put into jail. Carly is the protagonist in this book, her mom's boyfriend Dennis beat Carly right before she was put into foster care. This story takes place in the Murphy's house. This book is called One for The Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. Could you imagine if you were just thrown into foster care, then thrown into a random person's home? That's what happened to Carly.
